Social media giant Facebook said it reached an unprecedented milestone this week, with one billion people using the site in a single day.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg praised the accomplishment in a posting on the social media site Thursday.

"On Monday, 1 in 7 people on Earth used Facebook to connect with their friends and family," he said. "This was the first time we reached this milestone, and it's just the beginning of connecting the whole world. A more open and connected world is a better world. It brings stronger relationships with those you love, a stronger economy with more opportunities, and a stronger society that reflects all of our values."

Facebook is the world's largest social network with 1.5 billion monthly active users.

Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004 while studying at Harvard University.
